Kittens pack enormous growth into their first year and need calorie-dense, protein-rich food made for kittens. Here's the general pattern — use the chart on your food and your vet's guidance for exact amounts.

How often to feed

  • Under 4 months: free-feed or 4 small meals a day
  • 4–6 months: 3 meals a day
  • 6–12 months: 2 meals a day

Wet, dry or both?

Many owners feed a mix: wet food supports hydration (cats are poor drinkers), while dry is convenient. Whatever you choose, it should say "kitten" or "all life stages" and be complete and balanced per AAFCO.

How much

Kittens need roughly two to three times the calories per pound that adult cats do. Follow the packaging chart for your kitten's weight and keep them lean but not skinny. Transition to adult cat food around 12 months.
